File is not indexed

Posted: 10-23-2003, 11:27 AM
Hello experts, I just imported over 700MB of video from
my camcorder and after the capture and creating file
process, WMM hung for 15 minutes until I checked the
status in Task Manager and saw "Not Responding".
Thinking that the video was ok, I ended WMM. When I tried
to play it through WMP, it would play but I couldn't fast
forward to check it out because it kept returning to the
place it was at when it was playing. I then opened WMM
and tried to import it, and got "Cannot import file: the
file is not indexed." So, is there a way to finish my
video or do I have to start from scratch?

Thank you.

Hi there,

Yes, go to www.microsoft.com and search for Indexer and media tools, you
should find the indexer program. Run your file through that. In fact all
you have to do is open the file with the program and immediately close
it....that alone will cause it to be indexed.

Hi again,

That last reply could have been better...

Try
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.aspx
I think that's the right page.

John thank you for the speedy reply. I found the encoder
and downloaded it. I keep getting a "File failed to save"
message after trying a few different ways. I thought I
would reply back to you in case you know something else
that I don't instead of trying my way all night. I'm
using the File Editor portion of the program which says I
can open a file, change its attributes and when I save it
is automatically indexed. Sound right?

Hi there,

On the assumption it all installed properly for you....

From the Start Menu go to Programs > Windows Media > Utilities > Windows
Media File Editor.

With the file Editor there are just two things for you to do...1) Open the
file you want to fix...and would you believe it....click on File and Save
and Index...That's It !!

Hi Again,

I don't know if its a flaw, or what...but I just found if I allow the
program to save back to "My Videos" it gives the same error message....very
odd, my solution was to save it somewhere else, and then it worked fine.

Perfect! You saved me precious time and I was able fulfil
my promise on time! Is there a points system in this
newsgroup? If so, tell me how to award you the most
points possible. Thanks again for expert advice!
