Default File permissions

I have files located on an old HD that are encrypted.
When I reinstalled XP I no longer have access to these
files. I can see them but not access them. Does anyone
know how to view my files again?

Default Re: File permissions

Is your PC part of a domain? If yes ask your domain administrator for help
(he MIGHT be able to help you).

If your PC is not part of a domain and you haven't exported EFS certificate
with which you encrypted your files, they are unfortunately as good as gone.

Default file permissions

reboot into safe mode - the security tab becomes visable
for properties on files and folders, you can setup better
permissions this way.

Sounds like you're missing a password.

Default File Permissions

Hi,

Just wondering if there is a way to add file permissions
to folders and files without adding a pc to a domain.

It is a standalone pc at home running windows xp and I
need to add permissions so that other people in house
cannot go into certain directories etc.

please advise

Start -> Help & Support
search for File Permissions.

You must be NTFS.. No domain was ever required to define file and directory
permissions on a machine.

BTW - I hope that email address is fake - otherwise expect emails from Fake
Microsoft's offering patches. Spam is evil. Protect yourself!

Default Re: File Permissions

In Home the Security dialog is only available in properties
of NTFS objects when you are in a F8 safe mode boot.
In a normal boot you can use the cacls command at cmd prompt.
cacls /?
gives syntax info.
