File sharing w/Windows Media Player??

Posted: 09-27-2003, 02:05 AM
Does Windows Media Player allow sharing of files you've
saved to your hard drive? I don't download music or use a
file sharing site like Kazaa, but people are telling me
that even if I only copy my own CDs to my hard drive, I
may be unwittingly allowing that music to be shared with
others by using the Windows Media Player. Is that so? Or
is it an option (to share your files)? If it's an option,
how do I find out how to pass on that option? I need to
find out if my files are or could be shared -- I don't
want to sound stupid, but I've been unable to get my
question answered through any Microsoft on-line help, and
the young folks where I bought my computer and software
just look at me like I'm from the moon (you know how they
look at "older" folks)and don't have an answer.

Any type of file can be shared, depending on the file-sharing program you are
using. You can often exclude folders (or filetypes) to be shared. Why would
you want to share copyrighted material and risk the wrath of the RIAA?
