Finding Used Memory Address Space; Maximum amount of RAM

Posted: 04-14-2007, 05:50 PM
[Win Vista Ultimate 32-bit]

Is there any way to find out what portion of my memory address space
is free, or how much has been used up?

Essentially I want to find my system's maximum amount of addressable
physical RAM, before I buy more.

If it makes a difference, Memtest 86+ reports my 2x1GB sticks as
2048MB. However, task manager says 2045MB and Control Panel>System
says 2046MB. Computer reckons I have 2.00GB. Does this mean that I
have in fact already surpassed my maximum by 2-3MB or it's just a
glitch? (I wondered if it was subtracting 1MB from each stick due to
the SPD or something.) I know for sure that 768MB will be dedicated to
my graphics card but I assumed that the rest of my PCI/Onboard devices
(WiFI card, sound card, NICs) wouldn't need 200MB, leaving me with 3Gb
of address space for RAM. I would be happy with that.

So if anyone can confirm a way to find out the amount of address space
used/remaining I would be much indebted to them.

Thanks and regards,
Jonathan

Unfortunately not, I've read up all about PAE, addressing, etc. but I
have so far been unable to find a way of actually discovering how much
of the potential 4GB I'm losing. Ideally, I'd like to know whether the
extra 1GB I'm contemplating adding will actually be used before I buy
it.

You checked memory via the Performance Monitor?

Unless there's a way of using it that I'm unaware of, it only tells me
how many hard faults I'm getting and the amount of physical memory
used. I know how much physical memory is getting used up already, it's
the amount of adress space that's being used that I need to find.
