floppy disk drive is not working on my newly installed computer?

Posted: 12-26-2003, 09:50 AM
hello.

i just installed a new computer with AMD chip and a new
mother board, etc.

anyway, i tried to use an old floppy drive from my
windows 98 computer. the first time, i can hear the
running sound, however, the drive can\'t read any disk
that i inserted.

so i changed another floppy drive. it didn\'t work.

so i installed the first floppy disk drive on the
computer again. this time, the light is on all the time.
and when i insert a disk, i can\'t hear any running sound
from the floppy drive.

so what is happening? can someone tell me? thanks!

i don't know how to read this forum, so if you can send
me an email to youngjock4u@yahoo.com, that would be much
easier for me, thanks!

Hi,

If your Floppy drive light is lit all the time you have plugged in the
ribbon cable the wrong way round, reversing it will cure that little
problem.

I will assume you have just installed Windows XP on your new machine, that
being the case you can give up all hope of your floppy drive working again,
I have never had a floppy drive work reliable on any XP machine I have
worked on, not even those made by the Likes of DELL or HP work as 2 friends
found out over Christmas on there new boxes.

There is a fault with XP's Floppy drivers and older floppy drives you could
try a new more upto date floppy drive but to be honest I would not bother
and would use a CDRW or similar instead.

My floppy drive has been reliable and has read every old
disk I've tried. I built the machine a year ago with an
Intel D845GBVL mobo and a new $11 floppy from New Egg.

I have noticed over the past months that there is a common thread
with these floppy problems. AMD and PROPRIATORY. Is
this a fact?

Not sure about the link with AMD, but it could be that since
AMD is often part of a budget motherboard, some QC problems
may be involved.

Re: floppy disk drive is not working on my newly installed computer?

Hi, Frank - and all.

My last couple of mainboards (from DFI and EPoX) use AMD CPUs, and neither
have had any problems reading my floppy drives. My floppy actually is a
10-year-old combination drive, with both 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" drives in a
single case. I've run it with every version of MS-DOS and Windows in these
10 years, using Intel and even Cyrix (IBM) CPUs. I've been running WinXP
Pro for 2 years and have used the PDC version of Longhorn.

So, all these worries and rumors about incompatibility with various chips
and Windows versions are bogus.

The real problems are likely to be in two areas. The first is the one Paul
mentioned first: simple cable, connector and/or jumper problems.

The second problem area dates back to the beginning of floppy drives:
individual variations between pieces of hardware. Even back in TRS-80 days,
we had problems where my computer could not read floppies written by your
computer - and vice versa. Usually the heads were slightly out of
adjustment on one or both drives. Sometimes the media was bad. Sometimes
the drives were just getting old and worn out.

And sometimes we never did figure it out. :-{

But it's not because of some nefarious scheme to make them stop working.
And it's NOT because either AMD or WinXP are incompatible with floppies!

I think that this line sums it up the best.

Happened to me, tried a working drive from another pc.
tried a working cable ditto, still didn't work. Mobo fault.
Took the homebuilt pc back to the shop where I bought
the mobo they swapped it out no arguement.
Does most of the rest of the pc work ok. Your
handywork hasn't screwed the rest of the pc.
I use antistatic straps etc when working on pc's.

Just wanted to add two things to the comments.
1. I have seen a fairly large amount of comment and criticism of Floppy
Discs/Drives over the past couple of years.
2. I have a 2 year old Dell Dimension with a generic Floppy Drive which I
use fairly frequently to store small files. I HAVE NEVER in that time had a
read/write failure. For the money you pay ther is no better product to have.
CD-R discs can be too easily damaged to be considered a replacement. Jump
Drives/Flash Drives/Thumb Drives, etc, are too expensive to replace them.
Sometimes you just need a small memo pad.
