Freeze right after "setup is detecting hardware..."

Hi folks,

Trying to install Windows XP on a VIA-based motherboard with AMD Athlon
XP cpu. Problem is, it freezes right after it boots off the cd and
displays that 1 line "setup is detecting hardware". Any ideas?

There is some H/W conflict

remove all non-essential cards and try again

I disabled just about everything in the BIOS. Do I have to format the
hard drives first as FAT[32] or NTFS?

I am currently running Fedora 10 Linux.

No, you do not have to format the HD first...

What I meant was to physically remove all non-essential H/W
not merely disable in the bios.

BTW: I am also using Fedora 10 and it works perfectly
I think I'd just leave it as it is...
you should be able to run most Windows apps in WINE

Is the BIOS seeing the hard drive(s)?

Talked to my motherboard manufacturer today and the support guy says its
probably faulty memory (RAM). I have two 512 MB sticks in. I am going to
remove one of them and see if anything changes.
