Function key on Dell laptop

When I undock my Dell the function key acts as though it
is pressed. this makes typing very difficult. This only
started after I loaded XP Pro onto my machine. But I also
found that it happens on a different Dell laptop that has
2000 Pro. Very frustrating. any suggestions?
