Gah!! cant delete stupid desktop icon?? help??

I tried to download something a few weeks ago, i cant remember what it
was, but i decided to cancel half way, but an icon had already been
created, and now, i cant delete it. I use the delete button and it says
i need permission cause im not user administrator, BUT I AM!! theres no
other account but mine on my laptop, and then i click i agree, and it
says it cant.
Now normally i wouldnt be too bothered by this, but ive tried right
click, dragging and dropping into the recycle bin, uninstall programs,
all i can think of.
My bullguard keeps popping up every half hour or so telling me its
stopped a malware and i know its that poxy icon.
Ive tried changing the file extension, everythinggg that i could
possibly think of.
I want it gone!

Hello Akarithor,

If you have the 32 bit Vista, then you can try using the free program
Unlocker to see if can help you delete it.

I've heard booting into safe mode allows you to delete things otherwise
undeletable.

My aunties computer got booted into safe mode a few months back, and
they couldnt get it back to normal, although this was just windows 2000,
so its kinda put me off ever trying! lol, is there a way to get it back
to normal mode afterwards?

I find it a little strange that yor anti-malware informs you that you
have a problem and does not attempt to remove it, .
anyway if you right click on your unwanted icon and select *properties
*select the *security *tab and then *advanced *then *owner*.

select *edit, *accept the UAC prompt, select your username from the
list and select *OK*

you should see a dialog showing you have just taken ownership of the
file
*OK *your way back to your desktop and you should now be able to
delete the file.

you may want to run a 'Spybot S&D'
(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html) scan to check
that nothing made it through your Malware app.

After booting into safe mode, restart the computer, it should boot
normally. I've done it on my Vista Ultimate Machine several times
without any issues.

You can press the *Windows Key + Pause/Break* key to open the System
window. Under *System Type*, you will see the 32 bit or 64 bit as your
version of Vista. :geek:

Well, you obviously have some maleware on the machine, and while the icon
may point to it, it isn't it. You need to do a bit more work. Run a good
malware scanner in safe mode and clean up the machine. Likely the icon will
go to.

On another point, you are NOT the Administrator by having an administrator
account. Otherwise, any maleware could do whatever it wanted to on your
machine. To do a wide range of things in Vista, that normally you should not
be doing, you need to elevate your status to full administrator. I'd be real
slow about doing that till I got rid of that malware.

It pops up with a lil timer for 20 secs, informs me that it has stopped
a malware and that my computer is not infected, my subscription has ran
out with Bullguard, i got a free 90 day trial, i use my own antivirus.
I tried what you said, and its denied me changing the owner.
