Games Wont Install?

Posted: 06-11-2004, 07:31 PM
All the games I try to install wont install. The one game I have has an auto run. when it pops up I click install but nothing happens. Then a message will sometimes come up saying " Auto run was unable to carry out your command. If you have removed the CD for the CD-ROM, please replace the CD and try again." It comes up as "AutoRun error (2)" And my other games you click install and nothing happens.

ANY IDEAS??!! Thanks

Are these new games or older games? Some of the recent titles like Far Cry
won't install if they detect virtual cd-rom software installed on your
computer. Virtual cd-roms let you copy a game disk to your hard drive so
you can play without having a disk in your cd-rom drive.

I found a Delta Force 2 article when I searched the knowledge base. It
doesn't cover your problem but it does have a link to NovaLogic's site.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326527

According to ntcompatible this game should work on XP. I included a link
for an additional site that confirms this:

http://www.ntcompatible.com/compat.p...ndowsNT4&idx=d

http://www.geocities.com/jaredperi/c...elta_force.htm

What happens if you ignore the autorun message and try installing the game
by double-clicking on it's setup program with Windows Explorer?

Hmmm... I wonder if it's a problem with your cd rom drive since it seems to
affect all your games setup programs. Here are the articles I could find on
MSDN for troubleshooting cd drives install problems

http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=314855

Here's a generic article dealing with cdrom drives.

Hmm... then I'm at a lost to explain this. You mention that all your games
won't install. If it's not the cd rom drive then I have to guess that
either the Microsoft Installer is damaged or you have an incomplete install
on your system and the setup programs are refusing to run because they think
the application is already installed. There's no separate download for the
Microsoft Installer on XP. The latter suggestion involves going through the
registry to delete any application entries that might exist for the
interrupted install.

Re: Games Wont Install?

My hypothesis is that there might be old registry entries from prior
installs that are fooling the setup application into thinking the game is
installed. It's a long shot though because while this might be true for one
or two games you indicated this is happening with all your games and that
makes me suspect bad hardware or broken Windows Installer. You indicated
that the burner reads discs correctly and burns cds so it's probably not a
hardware issue. The age of some of your games also lets me rule out newer
copy protection schemes being incompatiable with your cd drive. If you can
tell me the name or model of your drive I can point you to a manufacturer's
website to get updated firmware for your cd drive which might fix the
problem and at worst, wouldn't hurt anything.

If you're willing, you might try opening the registry with Start > Run >
Regedit before you do that Windows reinstall. In the left panel click on My
Computer. Then do an Edit > Find > and input the name of your game program
or game developer (NovaLogic) and search the registry. Entries under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>(developer)>(appname) are probably okay to
delete but don't delete anything associated with a DirectX component. I've
seen game name entries under DirectInput, Direct3D and DirectSound and
they're probably okay.

Be careful when viewing and editing the registry. Deleting an entry could
make Windows crash or unbootable if you touch something besides your game
application's entries.
