getting rid of XP

Posted: 09-17-2003, 02:36 PM
Without going into further details, it's just not installing properly so I'm
waiting until I've reformatted and starting form scratch. but in the
meantime, each time I boot up, I get the option of booting from Win XP
Installation or 98 and unless I'm quick it starts the installation again and
I have to shut down and start again? How do I get rid of the XP start up
option?

The probable cause of your Windows XP installation issue is
you are attempting to install XP on the same partition Windows 98
is installed on. If you wish to upgrade over Windows 98, you should
select the default "Upgrade" option during setup. Do not select the
"New Installation" option unless you have an empty drive or partition
and wish to dual-boot with Windows 98.

If you have the "retail version", select the default "Upgrade" option
during setup. If you have an "OEM version", then you cannot upgrade.
In that case a reformat of your drive is required.

Boot with a Windows 98 Start-up floppy and at the command prompt type
SYS C:

That should take care of the bootmenu you are seeing and you can boot
normally into Windows 98 again.

Hi Steve,

You can modify the boot.ini file so XP doesn't show up as an option, see
289022 HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP

Thanks
Will that get rid of the partial installation too?

No you will need to search out the files and delete them. The following
files are hidden files. These hidden files are located in the root folder of
the drive that is used to start the computer. Typically, this is drive C,
which is the first drive letter that is available for hard disks.

To remove the Windows XP system files, follow these steps:
1.. Start Windows Explorer.
2.. On the View menu, click Folder Options.
3.. On the View tab, click Show all files, and then click OK.
4.. In the root folder of drive C (or the boot drive), delete the
following files:
a.. Boot.ini
b.. Ntbootdd.sys
c.. Ntdetect.com
d.. NTLDR

5.. On the drive on which Windows XP is installed, delete the following
files if they exist:
a.. Hiberfil.sys
b.. Pagefile.sys
c.. Documents and Settings folder
d.. WINNT folder if there is one
