Getting Vista x64 to see 4gb of RAM

Posted: 07-08-2008, 05:59 AM

Hey all, I have 2 1gb sticks of dual channel ram. Was running XP 32 bit
before.

I added another 2gb stick and since XP can only see up to 3gb, decided
to give Vista x64 another shot. (I had used it before but went back to
XP because of driver issues)

Anyway,

P5N-5 SLI is my mobo
I checked the manual and it does say it can use up to 8gb
But Vista is still only seeing 3gb. It doesn't say anything about how
to configure it to do so. And I dont see any obvious options. Only timer
settings.

I already have SP1. That KB fix I've seen fix a few boot problems, but
that's not the problem I'm having. (Although I did try it anyway and it
said it couldn't be used for my version)

Should I maybe flash my BIOS to the newest version? I don't really want
to do that unless its really necessary.

Thanks.

As to a BIOS update, read the notes on what was fixed by not only the newest
update but also the revisions between yours and the newest to see if the
issue is addressed. Unfortunately, the notes are always very criptic so if
the mobo mfg hosts user forums use them to see what you can learn.

But first I would see if your BIOS has a memory remapping setting because I
suspect that is the problem and if it is a BIOS update would be a waste of
time.

The P5N is an Asus board is it not, I beleive that the latest bios update
does indeed resolve this issue, Something to do with the earlier revision not
detecting correct ram voltages and timings as far as I am aware.

Actually I updated my BIOS to 1002 last night, Still no go
But it looks like it's not a Vista issue. It's my mobo itself that onl
sees 3GB or so

What I guess I'm gonna have to do is return the new 1 2gb stick and ge
2 more 1gb sticks

Well this is making no sense. I checked my mobo manual, it says that it
supports up to 8gb of RAM.
I checked all through the CMOS and can find no "memory mapping" option.
The manual doesn't say anything further than that.

The only thing I know of that is slower than navigating the Asus website is
constipation, but you need to visit the forum for your board.

Keep in mind that the ram test reports must show positive not only for your
brand of ram but also for the configuration you plan to use. Just because
the specs say a mobo supports DDR2 pc6400 and elsewhere says that the mobo
supports 8GB of ram, it does not follow that the mobo supports 8GB of
pc6400. It may support pc 6400 in two slots but only support pc5300 in all
four slots. That's why you have to read the test reports and talk to users
in the forum.

Something to do with memory mapping related to video card, I believe. It
should be just a BIOS settings.
