Guest Account in Vista Premium

Posted: 02-22-2008, 12:03 PM
I managed to change the Guest account to administrator type. Tried to amend
the type back to standard user with other administrator accounts without
success. Even tried the hidden administrator account.

The Guest account does allow the standard user option to be selected but
nothing happens when this is applied, it remains as an Administrator.

Anyone have any idea how to reset the Guest account to a standard user

Many thanks

Hi Kelvin,

Are you this is the Guest account? You can only turn the Guest account
on or off. You cannot change it's account type to Standard or
Administrator.

If it is a Standard account that you changed, then you must have
another Administrator account to change it back to a Standard account.

Hi Shawn

It's definately the Guest account. I can turn it off and On. When signed on
as the guest account profile it gives the option to change it to a standard
user and the apply button is enabled but nothing happens. When I access this
account using any other account profile (even the hidden admin) it only give
the option to disable the account or change the picture, the option to change
type is not shown.

On your system is the option shown to change user type when logged in as the
Guest Account?

However, I would suggest that you don't try to change it if it is.

Hi Kelvin,

Yes, I have those options only when I'm logged on to the Guest account.
I have to give the Administrator password to do it though. My guess it
that once you changed the account type for the Guest account, it is no
longer considered a Guest account. I believe the only solution is to
create another Guest account and delete the other one that has been
changed to an Administrator account type.

Ok Kelvin,

I figured out how to fix this.

1. Open the Start menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search area), type "netplwiz" (no quotes
and press Enter.
3. Click Advanced tab.
4. Under "Advanced user management" click the Advanced button.
5. In the left pane, click on Users folder.
6. In the middle pane, double click on Guest.
7. Click on the "Member Of" tab.
8. Click on Administrator to highlight it.
9. Click the Remove botton.
10. Click OK on all Windows, and close the others.

Hi Shawn

It nearly worked up to the point of the Advanced User Management. The lusmgr
panel states the plugin does not work with vista premium. However, by going
back and clicking on the user tab in User Accounts it allowed me to click on
the guest account and click on its properties. The group membership tab then
allowed me to set the Guest account back to a standard user.

Fantastic work mate. Well done and many thanks for your help.

Kelvin,

I'm glad to hear that you got it resolved to. I find it strange that it
does not allow you to change the account type back for a Guest account
like it does with the Standard and Administrator accounts.
