Reinstall Windows. This will recreate the file and also repair other
files that may be damaged as well.

hal.dll corrupt

I am getting the following error while booting my laptop
with WinXP.

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:

Windows\System32\Hal.dll

Microsoft knowledge base lists the solution for this
problem but it requires a WinXP CD to boot.

I donot have any system recovery or boot CD for this
laptop. Could someone advice how to boot the machine
without a XP CD?

Thank you.

Hi, 1C160A.

Sounds like you need to discuss this with whoever installed WinXP, and/or
whoever sold it to you. Was WinXP pre-installed on your laptop? Is the
computer still in warranty? Have you asked the vendor for the WinXP CD-ROM?

If you mention the make and model of your laptop, somebody here will
probably recognize it and give you some good advice on how to proceed. But
it does no good for us to tell you to call Dell if you have a Compaq.

What you could do, if you have access to another computer
with internet, is go to Microsoft's site.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-
bd5afee126d8&displaylang=en
download the boot disk installer
create the 6 boot floppy disks and boot your computer to
the floppy disks.
goto recovery console
run chkdsk /p If there are errors found the run
chkdsk /r to repair.
exit to restart when complete
