Hard drive 180GB but only shows 137GB

Posted: 01-20-2004, 08:56 PM
I am trying to install a new Hitachi Deskstar harddrive to my XP system but I need to enable the system to recognize the 180 GB. Currently the capacity only reads at 137GB (article 303013

I have the proper version of the Atapi.sys file as described at URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];303013 .

So now what? My drive still reads at the lower GB limit. Just for fun, I went into Regedit to track down HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Atapi\Parameters\ so I could maybe change the EnableBigLba value to 1 as described on the article page. I couldn't do this as my system did not show an EnableBigLba name or icon anywhere. How can I change the value if the thing doesn't exist in the first place

The only other instructions are for an "unattended installation with the Microsoft System Preparation tool." Not only do I have no idea what that is, but I don't believe it applies to me anyhow

The instructions stop there and give no further clue as to how to enable the system to see the entire drive

Any help out there would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

I had to use Partition Magic to fix this problem.

You need to turn the FAT48 or 48LBA support. Don't ask me where it is.

So what you're saying is that somehow I have to create 2
partitions on the 180GB drive so that neither exceeds the
137GB limit?

The Microsoft article implies that all that has to be
done is to "reset" the registry to accept the larger
drive and somehow POOF! it would happen. I feel like I
missed a memo somewhere.

The reg entry 'EnableBigLba' is only applicable to pre WinXP SP1, according
to the KB article,
Though it then shows the unattended installation as adding the reg.key if it
is missing. Thus there would appear to be a discrepancy in the KB article
Does yr bios see the disk as 180gb? if not you need to update yr bios
Have you examined the disk in Management Consol?
Is yr WinXP updated?

Install the SP1 to bipass the 137GB barrier. My 160GB
drive was in the same situation before I install SP1.

Thank you for that, but I am completely up to date on
every update possible. XP Home Edition SP1 and my
ATAPI.sys is the correct version. There be something I
haven't updated, but the Microsoft articles don't
indicate anything else.

Are you saying that as soon as you installed SP1 the
problem just went away? If that's the case, then I
should be seeing my full drive capacity at this
point...but I'm not.

I'm at a loss.

David,

I'm checking the BIOS to see if it sees 180GB as soon as
I finish this reply.

What is the "Management Console"?

WinXP is updated as much as I can possibly make it as far
as I know.

From help, Computer Management, manage disks - this will allow you to
see/identify/format etc disks
I'm not sure of precise sintax since I'm not on my WinXP sys at the moment,
but Help will get you there.
If you formated hd, prior to enabling largelba, or updating bios if req, you
will iether have to reformat or create a new partition to recover slack

To use '48 bit LBA' addressing (needed to get at more sectors on the
drive than the 128GB binary; 137 billion decimal) that can be addressed
by 28 bits, you need:

A suitable drive - OK

THe OS to have drivers that handle it

A motherboard and BIOS that support it. This is probably the trouble -
only very recent boards have the needed controllers and BIOS. You might
be able to find a BIOS upgrade to do it at the board maker's site:
otherwise you will need a plug in card (eg by Promise) with 48 bit
controllers and BIOS
