Did you ever find an answer to your problem? I have the same problem
and can't find a solution.

Hard drive light stays on

I have just developed a new problem. My hard drive light constantly stays
on. System Monitor says that there is no hard drive activity taking place. I
have seen others in other web forums with this problem when using WinXp. I
am using XP Home, but this also occurs with XP Pro users. While it's more of
an annoyance than an actual problem, I can't stand when my computer is doing
something I don't know about. (I know, I know, I shouldn't be using XP if I
don't like not knowing what's going on.) No one has ever found a solution to
this on any of the forums I've seen, and I was wondering if any of you have
any thoughts.

When the light is on - is it on solidly, all the time? Even if it sounds
like the disc isn't spinning? Or is it just flashing and flickering like
there really is disc activity? The reason I ask is that I've had
motherboard where I had the same problem and I just had to switch the hard
drive light on the motherboard. In other words, the polarity of the wires
were wrong and the hard drive light stayed on immediately upon power up and
never went off. Of course, this would usually happen only when I was
first installing a motherboard, but I also had it happen once to a machine
that had been running fine for weeks. It was the strangest thing -
almost like there was a small short in the wire. I unplugged and then
reconnected the hard drive light and it was fine again. I just it might
be something to try if nothing else is working. I should also add that
I could tell that there was no disc activity because I could hear when the
disc really did get used and that once I fixed it, the light behaved as it
should.

Good luck,

Mike
