HDD not found?

Posted: 03-01-2004, 09:16 AM
Hi!

I installed Windows XP Pro and it works fine with my two ata100 HDDs. But then I (stupid) tried to (as an extra storage space) install one of my old HDDs (850Mb) which has been earlier in win98 machine (probably FAT or FAT32?). Don't remember if that drive had a system or not, does it matter?

But my problem is that now WINXP can't automatically find the HDD (BIOS shows it and it is on Auto setting there). It is hooked onto Secondary IDE channel as one and only master drive. The primary has the CD-ROM. I read newsgroup answers and used the XP help (there was that story that I should rescan/initialize the already listed new HDD, but it does not show there at all, even after rescan!!!) but to no avail. The HDD avoids me! :-

How can I make the hw installed, correctly BIOS configured HDD visible in the Windows XP? It sounds like this is some kind of security procedure for the OS since it does not log them HDDs automatically. I remember Win98 was better in this respect

Please help

Control panel, administrative tools, disk management,
should be able to see it there. If so, and there's still
an OS on it, you can format it from there. If that
doesn't work, disconnect the other drives, plug in only
that drive and boot from an OS floppy or CD rom, format
the disk and put everything back together. A backwards
approach, but one that works...

But JEM, that would be really backward, since that means I need to lose (or at minimum, copy first on different machine) all data on that disk. Why is the newly inserted disk not showing on the disk management list, I wonder? My OS in on one of those ATA100 drives I have on the machine, shouldn't that be enough, why is and OS (and that might be an older win98 for example) needed for this "non-showing" HDD? A lot of questions but it seems that installing a storage device such as a HDD should be easier

Or does it help if I re-install the whole WindowsXP? Maybe that process can find my new HDD? Anybody, JEM

1. Could you see it in disk management?

2. Didn't know you wanted the info on the drive....
Anyway, shows in the bios, boots into xp no prob... hmmm.

Sorry, is there still an OS installed on the drive? Just
a guess, but maybe XP is ignoring the drive because it
has an OS on it. (some MVP must know for sure) Is there
anyway to save the files you want; to CD ROM, or zip
drive and then format? If the drive is only 850MB without
copying the OS and programs, all the data would fit on
one CD. Which just made me think of something else, does
XP support such a small drive, must be old, wonder if
it's on the comaptibility list... no reason not to
be 'cause it's just a HDD, but....

Oh yeah, how it it attached to the computer, to the
motherboard, ATA controller, PCI card....?

No.

Sorry if did not make myself clear on that! I plain assume people don't want to automatically erase all, every time they move the HDD into some other PC

I forget, since the drive was in use about half a year ago. I assume you don't mean it has been formatted with win98 to work as a storage drive. If the HDD does have some operating system it must be Win98 since I have not own any other OS during the previous PC lifetime. If that is the reason for ignoring it, sounds a little stupid since the drive is not even on boot list? Who/what is MVP

I can do that but it is very laborous, first I need to find a machine with buringn CD-ROM, attach the HDD to it, and then make a copy of those things. On the current PC I have all that already and I could do the formating if only could log on to this HDD first

Oh yeah, how it it attached to the computer, to the
motherboard, ATA controller, PCI card....

It is ATA secondary connector, master (and only) HDD on it. On the primary connector I have only the CD-ROM. On the primary ATA100 connector there are two modern HDDs working perfectly.

Could it be so that I could have the "naughty HDD" working by simply re-installing the XP (and in the process it would "find" this hardware

well there are two typs of computer problems; hardware,
or software. Since you drive is recognized in the bios,
we can rule out a hardware problem. must be a software
issue. (which would mean xp)

MVP = most valuable professional. They are the pros on
these N.G.s. The rest of us just try to help out where we
can.

Last thing to try, remove all the jumpers off the HDD and
give it a shot, or try moving the jumpers. Sometimes the
jumper diagrams on the drives are confusing because they
are 'upside down' in relation to the where the pins are
on the drive.
