headphones don't switch on with Vista

Posted: 11-06-2007, 02:45 AM

I have Vista 64bit on an Asus C90S laptop. The laptop speakers work fine
but when I plug in headphones the sound doesn't automatically switch to
the headphones. The laptop speakers do shut off but no sound comes from
the headphones. The headphones do work. I've tested them on other
devices. I can get them to work on this laptop but I have to go into
the sound control area and set the headphones as the default sound and I
have to disable the laptop speakers. How do I leave both options enabled
and just have it switch to the headphones when I plug them in like XP
would do? I don't know who made the sound card for the laptop. When I
try to look at it under device manager it just says High Definition
Audio Device and it says manufacturer is Microsoft and that the device
is working properly. Why won't it switch to headphones automatically
when I plug them in?

Hi winstonsmith,

the latest drivers for the audio on your laptop is
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/...sta_070806.zip the
version is V6.0.1.5436

See if apply these drivers will solve the problem,

This looks like Realtek HD Audio drivers. If so, the option to disable the
speakers when the headphones are plugged in is available in the Realtek HD Audio
Manager in Control Panel (Classic view) or by right clicking on the red Realtek
speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and selecting Sound Manager
which should be available after installing the below referenced drivers, or from
the Realtek site directly:

In regards to the Asus link, should I actually use those? The Asus site
says those are for Vista 32bit. I have 64bit.
As for the Realtek idea, how do I find out who made the sound in this
thing. It doesn't say Realtek anywhere.

Hi,

I got to the drivers from the Asus support page for your Laptop ....
http://tinyurl.com/2heazs

On this page for all drivers they only specify 32 Bit Vista, you could
allways create a restore point before installing????
