Help a nube? Network sharing btwn Vista and XP

I have just bought a Vista based machine using Vista Home Premium. I have an
older XP Home SP3 machine which I'd like to network. Thus far, it's been a
hit and miss routine. At one point I managed to see the XP from the Vista
but I'm not sure how I did it. Can anyone suggest a good source of how I can
set this up so I can understand what I'm doing? Thanks.
