You might consider this: I had an older CD-RW drive when I first
installed XP. The drive had a habit of "disappearing" right in the
middle of installing software. The only way I could regain access to
the drive was to reboot my computer.
Finally, I gave up, and purchased a NEW CD-RW, for $59, and installed
it. I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS with my CD-RW since.
