| I just loaded ( well at least tried to load) windows xp on my computer and installation seems to be going fine..then the setup screen gets to the where it says "FINALIZING INSTALLATION: Setup will complete in approximately 19 minutes". Below this the bar moves only a small portion to da right and then stops. I tried keeping the computer on all night and unpluggging devices and it still dont seem to move. Even if i restart the computer it stops at the same spot each time.....I have antivirus software but i disabled it....somebody PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!! | Guest

| Reinstall your previous version of Windows, then, while at the desktop of that version, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ "Matthew" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:073601c397eb$bc866960$a001280a@phx.gbl... | You are saying that Windows ME is only on a recovery disk? You need to find out what's causing the problem. You appear to have some hardware problem. Failing my previous response which was a means of trying to diagnose the source, about all you can do is disconnect everything from the system, remove all add-in cards except the graphics card since the system won't boot without it and then try to install XP. If that doesn't work, you most assuredly need to go back to ME. While this is some work, you'll need to get some idea of what's going on and the compatibility checking may zero in on the problem. At this point, it's not as though you have anything to lose by doing this. -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:035301c3981e$0a267840$a501280a@phx.gbl... | Any chance you could turn off your caps lock, it's disconcerting and considered shouting. I'm trying to help but you keep giving additional information which in turn throws roadblocks in the way of any help I can offer. Does your computer have any documentation that tells how to run its recovery procedure? If you have an actual ME CD and simply called it a recovery CD, have you got a Windows ME boot floppy? If no, you can go to www.bootdisk.com and create one. If you boot from that, at the prompt, type fdisk and press enter, delete the non-dos partition, create a primary dos partition, set it active and exit. If it says you have no non-dos partition your system is still fat32, delete the primary DOS Partition, create a new one, set it active and exit fdisk, reboot the system with ME floppy in the drive and at the prompt type format C: and press enter. Once format is complete, change to your CD-ROM drive and with the 98 CD in the drive, type setup, press enter and follow the screens. At the moment, you have a butchered install, likely caused by some hardware conflict that needs to be resolved before you can install XP. If you are in over your head on this, I suggest you take the computer to a shop where at least they may be able to reset your system to factory defaults for you. -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ "MATTHEW" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:049101c39829$bf30bfb0$a401280a@phx.gbl... | I'm sorry, that should have read ME CD and yes, it will delete everything on the system partition but that may well be a moot point at this time because the broken install would seem to have already done that. -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:054701c39836$58103920$a401280a@phx.gbl...
