Help with ext. hard drive

I have winXP. I have installed an Maxtor external Hard drive, which has
worked fine since mid-December. But now, when I try to access the drive, it
states that the drive is not formatted. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the
driver, and rebooted too many times to count.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I don't want to lose the data on that
drive.
