| hi. one day the folder names in my user folder (erm... the one with "documents" and "downloads" and "videos" etc) decided to disappear. not the whole folders, just the names. only list, details and tiles views display the names, extra large, large, medium and small do not. i know you can hide the file names with right click>view but thats not it,i thouight i should right click>view but the option to turn it on or off isnt there. this is a little frustrating, i know ive done something to change it but i cant figure out what. any help greatly apprectiated, tristan. | Guest

| Your User folder might be using a Pictures and Videos template. Try navigating to C:\Users, by clicking on Computer. Right-click on the (Your User Name) folder, and choose Properties. On the Customization tab, choose "All Items" under "What kind of folder do you want?" (Apply. OK). "triplestan" <u34350@uwe> wrote in message news:727584b19f844@uwe... Quote:

| hey you were right, it did have a pictures and videos template, so i changed it to all items. however, this doesnt fix the problem. when i navigate through c:\users i can see the names in all views, but when i go from desktop i cant, its still the same. dean-dean wrote: Quote:

| I was afraid of that. And you can't customize the "User Name" folder from the Desktop or the Start Menu shortcuts, but you can from Computer. The registry sees the same folder as two different situations, and as two different "trees", so to speak. Really, once your folder views start this sort of corruption, it gets worse from there. (For example, the Windows folder starts using a Music Details template, which can't be changed using Customize, because that tab isn't available in the Windows folder's Properties). Vista is set up to "remember" 5000 folders. That being said, deleting the following two keys in the registry, will give you a clean slate, and reset your folders to the defaults. (All remembered folder settings in Windows Explorer for view state, window position, sort order, column information, folder type, toolbar toggles, and search result views will be lost, just so you know what to expect; but any corruption, which indeed does happen, will also be deleted). The keys in Vista are: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU (right-click on the key BagMRU, in the left pane, and choose delete) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags (right-click on the key Bags, in the left pane, and choose delete) Log off and log back on to Windows to re-create the keys (done automatically), and start anew. By the way, the "Hide File Names" choice is only available in a folder using the Pictures and Videos template. Unfortunately, I don't know how you can reset the User folder, as seen under Desktop, to "All Items", short of digging through hundreds of registry entries. | thanks, that sorted it out. i knew it was a little more complicated than shift clicking back and forth lol. still, its a pain to have to do that, do you have any idea when microsoft would release some sort of fix for it? thanks again, tristan. dean-dean wrote: Quote:
