Hooking up a Vista system to a home network based on Windows XP

From the content of your post, you appear to be in the USA (Road Runner in NC?).
Is that right? You can't get Vista Starter in the USA - it's only for
developing countries.

So hoping that you don't have Starter, networking a computer with Windows Vista
is pretty much like one with Windows XP. Microsoft describes how this is done,
but there are gotchas which they don't describe.

Make sure that all computers are in the same workgroup - this is one major
difference with Windows Vista. Set the Vista Network Location Type to
"Private", and make sure that the NetBT setting is consistent.

We could maybe diagnose your problem, using logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):
