How can one install WinXPPro on a different pc or after formating hd on a XP pc

Posted: 11-04-2003, 08:14 AM
Hi,
I'd appreciate someone helping me in a step-by-step
procedure for the following types of WinXP installation
needs:

1. If one purchases a new pc and wishes to install the
WinXP Pro edition from an earlier pc, how should one
proceed with respect to key or license of WinXPPro?

2. Again, if one has to format a hd on a pc that
contained WInXPPro, then what should one do for the key
or license of the WInXP?

Thanks and best wishes,
Naushir

Remove it from the PC where it was previously installed and just install it
on the new PC. Depending on how long it has been since you activated on
the old PC, activation may be automatic over the Internet. If not, choose
to activate by phone instead and explain to the rep that you have replaced
your old PC with a new one, have removed XP from the old PC and now need to
activate on the new PC.

Are you asking about if you format and then reinstall on the same PC? That
is no problem. As the hardware will be the same activation will be
automatic over the Internet.

Hi,

1) One should proceed by installing with the original key *if* one has
uninstalled it from the earlier pc. You cannot use the same Product Key to
install WinXP to two different machines simultaneously. You need two copies
(licenses actually) of WinXP.

2) If you cannot find the key, then you should recover it from the system
before you format. If you have already done so, then contact Microsoft for a
replacement key (retail versions), or the system maker for OEM versions.

To recover the key, this utility works for retail versions:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/ViewKeyXP.exe

For OEM versions, download and install Aida32 from:
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

You want the Personal Operating System version. The key is under OS
information.

Or, try this one which just gives you the key:
