How can you setup a microphone without Speech Recognition installed

Posted: 01-05-2004, 07:31 PM
The microphone setup in XP seems to rely upon you having MS Office Speech Recognition installed, which I don't have. I want to setup a microphone for use with NetMeeting. Is there a way? So far Netmeeting doesn't seem to recognise that I have the mic connected at all.

Mic operation does not require installation of Offic speech recognition,
as far as I know, unless NetMeeting specifically requires it.

In the soundcard's settings verify that the mic volume is turned up, that
the mic channel is not MUTED. You might also see if there is an
OPTIONS|PROPERTIES|Record enable radio button. Might make a difference,
might not.

dev, you say: "In the soundcard's settings verify that the mic volume is turned up, that the mic channel is not MUTED.
.... where do you find the settings for soundcard dev? Where is the soundcard properties located...

"You might also see if there is an OPTIONS|PROPERTIES|Record enable radio button." Where would that be located

Thank you, Ski

goto control panel\sounds...\speech. the hardware wizard will test your
sound hardware and mic (you'll have to talk into the mic a couple of times),
OK back to desktop, and mic should work now.

Exact same problem here; the microphone setup in XP seems to rely upon you having MS Office "Speech Recognition" installed, which I don't have. I want to setup a microphone for use with NetMeeting. Is there a way? So far Net Audio doesn't seem to recognise that I have the mic connected at all - there IS NO "Speech Recognition" tab to choose from; only a "Text To Speech" tab - (under "Speech" in Control Panel). Isn't that standard software (with XP)?

Alright I went and tested my hardware, but when I speak into the mic to test it, the volume metre does not change, indicating that there is no sound being received through the mic. I have tried 2 different microphones, and neither work
Thanks for any help.

Is the Mic muted in the volume properties??

Double click the speaker icon on the lower right and check it there If the
Mic is Muted it won't work.

No, the mic is definitely not muted, perhaps it is a hardware issue? I have tried 2 different mic's, and neither work. Frankly, it's really starting to bug me. Thanks.

Well I had the same problem and scanned about 40 or 50 of these messages and found that no one ever solved there problem and got back to the group. Either they solved the problem and didn't have the courtesy to let others know how they did it or they are still fumbling around with the same unsolved mystery. Well I'm here to tell you that I solved my problem by downloading the latest version of DirectX 9.0b. The mike is working great now! Hope this helps all you other people
