Are you running a firewall program or does your Internet connection pass
through a router? If so, your ports including 135 are automatically
protected. You should probably go to a site that will do a security check
on your system and that will indicate to you what ports are unprotected and
that you should be concerned about.

If you are really into system security check out the Gibson Research site at
www.grc.com and click on Shields Up. Browse around while you are there as
there is some really neat stuff.

Thanks for the advice; firewall: check. shields up, etc.:
check. I already closed about a dozen other listening
ports by shutting down services...There's no way to shut
down the service listening on 135? I believe RPC locator
and/or 'endpoint mapper' is using 135, and I don't believe
I need this. But there doesn't seem to be any option to
turn it off either of those without turning off all of RPC.
