How do I disable the touch pad on a laptop when I plug in a usb mo

Posted: 09-27-2007, 06:28 AM
Hello:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501, running Vista Home Premium. Overall I really
like the computer, and I like Vista. Recently I had to reinstall Vista
because I have this habit of tweeking settings, and sometimes I end up
messing things up. (I can't help it, I use various programs like Tweek VI and
change things without thinking it through at times. I guess it's the hacker
mentality in me. )

Any way, before I reinstalled Vista, the computer would automatically
disable the touch pad - I think that is what it is called - whenever I would
plug in a usb mouse. This way I would not be as likely to brush my thumb
against it while typing, and thus end up with my cursor jumping to various
parts of the screen. Since the reinstall, I've been unable to figure out how
to set this option again.

I really miss having this option turned on, and I hope someone can tell me
how to do it again. I would like to say thanks in advance for any help anyone
can give me.

Thanks,

Max Jensen

My name is Brad and I work at Dell headquarters in Round Rock, TX. I
know you state you reinstalled Vista, but I was wondering if you
installed the Synaptics Touchpad driver? The driver is located at
'Drivers & Downloads' (http://tinyurl.com/39mje9) There should be an
icon in the taskbar after this is installed that will give you options
to disable the mouse. Do not forget to install all of the other drivers
for the system as well. Please let me know if you have any further
questions.

With my mouse and my Laptop from another large vendor I do not need to
disable the touchpad it and the mouse operate concurrently which is a great
when my USB connection is loose or the mouse batteries need replacement.

My mouse and touchpad work well together, also, I have a bad habbit of
hitting the touch pad when I'm typing and having my cursor moving to various
parts of the screen. Now that I can have the touch pad off when I have a
mouse plugged in, I don't have this problem!

I've never been a big fan of touch pads, and would prefer using a mouse. Of
course if I'm some place where my mouse battery dies, it is nice to have the
option of turning on the touch pad!

Once again, I really do appreciate all your help! In all honesty, it is
people like you, who make sites like this work! Hopefully someday I will be
able to return the favor!

Take care!

Max

I don't think his problem was resolved. M.jensen. Open Msconfig (type it
in RUN) and look under the startup tab. disable the touchpad. restart.

Yes! Someone who actually answered the question. My particular problem is
that I could not locate the touchpad file to disable. Under the startup tab
is there a different name for the touchpad file? thanx
