How do I prevent PIO mode on DVD drive?

Posted: 11-03-2003, 02:30 AM
I upgraded to xp pro a few weeks ago and I'm very unhappy.
If I attempt to play a DVD that has a readability problem
XP sets the transfer mode to PIO. This renders the DVD
drive useless. PIO is only fast enough for CD's.

XP will not change the mode to DMA unless I trick it. I
have to take my CD-ROM and DVD out, swap the master/slave
jumpers, reinstall, start XP so it will re-detect and set
the mode back to DMA. Then I change them back to the
original master/slave configuration.

Great! It's fixed, right? Only until I happen to put in a
DVD that won't play. Then it's back to PIO mode all over
again.

This is a stupid situation Microsoft has created. Why in
blazes won't stupid XP change the mode back to DMA?

So, can anyone help with this? How can I prevent the
change to PIO mode?
