How do I share a fax device on a network?

Posted: 12-01-2003, 05:30 PM
I can not share any of the fax devices on our network. I
can not find any specific instructions on how to
accomplish this on the Microsoft site, but their Acedemic
learning series book, and their website both state "Using
Fax, you can choose to send and receive faxes with a
local fax device attached to your computer, or with a
remote fax device connected to fax resources located on a
network."
I am unable to share a fax printer or modem in windows XP
Pro so does anyone know how I can accomplish this task? I
know I can do this using WinFax Pro, but we converted to
XP for this reason and now are at a loss. Any help at all
would be welcomed.

WindowsXP does not support fax sharing. Windows 2003 supports fax sharing.
If it's vital to you, use a Windows 2003 Server O/S.

I want to share a scanner, but after reading this I'm afraid of a similar
answer. HP's software for the scanner won't work on XP and XP's
scanner-ware leaves a lot to be desired in comparison. The Win98 machine is
part of my LAN and an occasional trip to the dungeon to utilize the HP
software's features is preferable to throwing more money at the problem.

The new scanners that you can get now for under $150 are
much better than the older models, and you would have to
be physicaly at the scanner anyway, so my suggestion is
look into a new scanner.
I am very interested in finding out why all the Microsoft
Windows XP publications state that a fax device can be
shared and now we find out that it can't be done. Most of
the time we are disapointed by the "FEATURES" that
Microsoft springs on us. This time I specifically change
a number of my client machines to XP Pro to access this
advertised "FEATURE" and find out it is all a pipedream.
Makes you understand why people are moving to Linux in
numbers.

A normal scanner is not a sharable device... there are scanners which are
networkable, Epson make some very nices one... they start at about $3,000...
therefore for the standard consumer, it's a LOT easier to buy two or three
normal ones at around $50-100 and spread them round the PCs.
