| I have an HP Pavilion dv2315nr Notebook PC running Windows Vista Home Premium. I am trying to install an update from HP Total Care Advisor (PC Action Center). It says I need to close “COM Surrogate (Process ID 5176)” but of course they don’t tell you how to close it. I checked in Task Manager, Applications Tab and didn’t see anything running with that name. Can someone please tell me how to close the COM Surrogate? | Guest

| Hey there Radeksgrl, Try this. Go into Task Manager>Processes Tab. Click on "Show processes from all users". Enter your Admin Creds. Then click on View>Select Columns, and click on the PID Checkbox. This is the Process Identifier or Process ID. Try to install the update and see what PID it fails on, and then look in the Task Manager (Try sorting by PID) and see what process it is. If you aren't familiar with killing processes, it can sometimes cause the system to lock up. So if you aren't sure if it should be killed or not, just post the name in here and we'll let you know what it is. Let me know how it goes! Best Regards, Will "Radeksgrl" wrote: Quote:

| Hi Will, Thanks for responding to my post. I tried what you said, however nowhere in the processes could I find a Process ID of 5176 or any Image Name that sounded like COM Surrogate. Any other ideas? Holly "William Anderson" wrote: Quote:

| I decided to restart my computer and try to run the HP update again. This time I said I needed to close another process ID (PID 5620). I looked it and it was something called the "dllhost.exe", which sounded important so I didn't close it. But this time the HP update gave me the option to "ignore" any open process. So I chose to ignore and the HP update installed successfully. One problem down, only 10 million to go! Thanks for all your suggestions. Holly "Radeksgrl" wrote: Quote:
