How to install into second disk ?

Posted: 11-27-2006, 09:08 PM
Hello,

In the first disk I have WinXP up and running.
I am trying to install Vista into the second disk. It uses the same
slot as the CD drive, so I have copied the entire Vista into an USB
hard disk. Then I tried to boot from it, but the boot failed.

Is it possible to make the USB hard disk bootable ?

I can boot MS-DOS 6.2 from an USB floppy disk.
Is it possible to boot Win2K/WinXP/Vista from the USB floppy disk, and
then install Vista from the USB hard disk ?

What do you mean that the drive you want to install to uses
the same slot as the CD drive?

No. None of the above can be booted from a USB device.

Hello Theo,

I have HP Compaq nc6420. The PC has one slot for a CD/DVD
player/burner. I have a second disk, that fits into the same slot.
During boot I can choose to boot from either the primary disk or
CD/DVD player. When the second disk is inserted, I can boot either
from the primary disk or the secondary disk.

I understand from your reply below, that I can only install Vista by
copying Vista into a dedicated folder in the primary disk running
WinXP. During the install process I will be able to choose the
partition that will contain Vista. Please corrdct me, if I have
misunderstood your reply.

Regards,

Marek

Yes. Others have used a utility to mount the .ISO on the
hard drive and install Vista from that. Otherwise I guess
extracting all the files would work, too. I guess if you
had a 4GB USB stick Vista probably could be installed from that.

Hello again,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I will copy Vista to a dedicated folde, and then try to install it.
I will report the outcome.

Hello,

Today I copied Vista into a dedicated folder. I started the install
process. Then the install process requested reboot. During the reboot,
I chose 'Windows setup', which ended up with a blue screen:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Stop: 0x000000ED
(0x8348E030, 0xC000014F, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Is there a solution to problem above ?
