HP deskjet 960c

Posted: 06-14-2006, 03:37 AM
i hope someone can help. a friend gave me a HP deskjet 960c printer. there
is 10% of the black ink left. before i invest the money in a new ink
cartridge, i wanted to make sure all is working well. but it is not...
the printer prints a test page just fine. but for any other word document,
it only prints the very first line. any suggestions? or do you think it
could be because the ink is low? thanks in advance

The Deskjet 960c is getting a little long in the tooth.. if you want
reliable printing, invest in a new printer..

Mike: thanks for your thoughts. but extra $$$ is a bit low right now, and all
the printers now have lots of bells and whistles, i just want a simple
machine....

hi alan
I just did a test page from windows xp, but it only printed the top line.
the good test page i have says "HP deskjet" on it, so i assume the good one
is from the printer.

If the printer created a good test page with correct colors means the print
head and mechanics are fine. Now you just need the proper USB to LPT cable.

I have had the most LUCK with the Belkin F5U002 cable.

This sounds like an example of the long standing communication problem with
later versions of windows and parallel port printers, esp. older models.
Assuming that the printer is connected to a parallel port, You should try--

Go into BIOS and change the printer port setting to SPP from ECP or EPP. The
mode names vary with different Bios Versions, So SPP may be listed as
bidirectional, PS2, or other variations. Windows XP should pick up the
change on reboot, and change modes. It turns out that the timing and
handshaking between a printer and the parallel port may not work properly
with older printer models and ECP or EPP modes.

Many of the older HP printers are long lived, and may outlast several of the
newer inexpensive models. There is a trade off in printing speed and
quality of printed photographs on the older printers. This may not be of
concern for your use.

hi chuck,
the laptop is usb, the printer is a parallel port. i am using the cable i
had on my older hp printer. The cable was purchased on ebay, and is not the
best quality.
I do not know how to get into BIOS, but if it is easy for you to explain, i
would be willing to give your suggestion a try.

All of a sudden, we have two computers involved, each using a different
interface method?
What drivers are you using for the printer? are they specifically for XP?
Were the drivers installed and then the printer?
Since you don't know how to access BIOS, I'll stay away from there at this
point.
