You're a little thin on description of your problem ...

Did you get any error messages, either on your computer or on the front panel of
the printer?
What happens when you try to print (from a non-complex application such as
Notepad)?
Did you follow the installation instructions here: http://tinyurl.com/lsdtd ?
How have you connected the printer (parallel; Ethernet)?
Are you certain that you have the proper and functional cables?
Have you setup the printer as described here: http://tinyurl.com/pbp92 ?
Can you print a printer configuration page from the printer's front panel?
If you are attempting to share this printer, did you read "Troubleshooting
Shared Printing Issues in a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP Environment"
http://tinyurl.com/k3h5r ?

http://tinyurl.com/pakls is the main hp support page for the 8550 series. If
the info here and the links above don't help, try posting at an appropriate hp
support forum (link on main hp support page).

Thanks so much for trying to help me I have no printer errors as I cannot
link the PC to the network printer (8550dn) - I have been through and
installed all the drivers from HP website for this product but I have
problems just trying to locate the printer on the network!

We have replaced an old printer at the same port using ethernet cables
(10/100 network ) and have an IP address of 172.16.1.55 for that printer - I
have configured the new printer to have the same IP address as the old one as
stated from the factory default IP address 192.0.0.192 (is this okay or not??)
- All the Apple Macs link up fine and the printer works but has local zone
(no IP address is mentioned)- it is just an issue with the PCs (XP) as they
cannot locate the printer at all on the network using the IP address or the
hardware address

I am tearing my hair out trying to work this out - really hope you can help
on this issue Thanks again!!!

If I understand you correctly, you have configured the printer to have IP address =
172.16.1.55 That's OK.

I am not familiar with the details of how hp's "JetDirect" print server works, but
the issue may be that it is not, in fact, a real "Microsoft Networking Network
Printer." In this case, you'll have to install a "Standard TCP/IP Port" on the XP
machines. See this page from MS-MVP Bruce Sanderson, and let us know if it helps.
