Default I can't see other computers in network neighborhood using vista

I have a Vista home premium. When I click on network folder sometimes the
computers on the network do not appear and sometimes it does. When it
doesn't I try turning off my firewall and it works, but now it doesn't. I
feel that it simply takes a long time for Vista to hook up in the network.
Is there a way to ensure that I can always access computers in the network?
Is there really a problem or does it just take a while?

First of all, you're not going insane. This is a real problem. But we need
more information. How is your network configured? What other machines (and
OS's) are on the network?

I have the same problem, I think.
I added a Windows Vista Basic machine to my home network.
I can ping all the other computers on my netowrk from the Vista machine
(they are all XP machines)
I can find the Vista machine from explorer on the XP machines but not the
other way around.
I turned off the Windows firewall and it does not seem to matter.
I also can not find the Vista version of "Find" or "Search" for computers.
Is this because the version is Vista Home Basic?

XP was so easy by comparison. There must be something obvious that I am
overlooking?
