I too have been having trouble installing and configuring WMDC. After
working through some logic on the base fact that Vista revolves around
Security, I went to see what services were turned on or off in the
Administrative Tools.
You will find that the Remote Call Procedure is turned ON via an Automatic
Start (by default), and the Remote Call Procedure Locator is turned OFF (to
start by Manual input). Restart the Remote Call Procedure and leave on
Automatic. Start the Remote Call Procedure Locator, and change to Automatic.
Then, disable Windows Defender and the Firewall, as well as whatever
Antivirus you are using, and the installation of WMDC after a new or repeated
Windows Update download should go through.
[Perhaps Vista views the Mobile Device as a Remote (far, far, far away)
Device. However, I am sure Microsoft has taken into account that a Mobile
Device is a threat to security as they can now be infected by Malware also.
Remember, RPC was a huge headache when Blaster and Sasser appeared]
This has worked on Beta 2 (Build 5384). I have not tried it on RC1 as I
went back to using Beta 2. RC1 stole my Display, Sound, and other drivers
during the upgrade and then RC1 had the gall to say that they are no longer
able to work after the upgrade. All my drivers worked great on Beta 2.
Don't forget to re-enable your Firewall, Defender and Antivirus after the
install and sync.
Good luck to you all.
