I know this has been covered but - download error!

Posted: 09-13-2006, 01:22 PM
I am reaching the end of my teather! This is well and truly driving me mad -
4 times now I have tried to download the RC1 and every time something goes
wrong. I tried Flashget, which stopped at around 2GB. I tried Firefox, which
worked but i stupidly thought the built in manager supported resume, so
closed firefox, only to see i'd have to start again, so that's a no go. I've
now tried "Free download manager" and get the following:

13:10:42 13/09/2006 Starting download...
13:10:42 13/09/2006 Opening file on the disk...
13:10:42 13/09/2006 Succeeded
13:10:43 13/09/2006 Unknown network error
13:10:43 13/09/2006 Pause 5 sec.
13:10:44 13/09/2006 Stopped

And that's all i get! It's done 2298MB, so nearly done, which makes it even
worse. Any ideas? If i click the link on the
http://download.windowsvista.com/pre...n/download.htm page to download
the 32Bit version, the IE download box comes up instantly! So I know for a
fact that the link isn't down. What on earth could be going wrong?

Thanks for any help,

Alex

Hey Alex - I've used the Akamai Technologies Download Manager several times,
stopped and resumed and haven't had any problems. Have you tried to delete
all remnants of your previous attempts as well as the download manager and
started from scratch? I did that each time I downloaded a new copy.

Thanks for your fast reply, John.

The Akamai Download Manager on the Vista download site would be my preferred
option. However, after the downloader installs, it asks me where I want to
save my file, and then I get "Network Error, cannot download. Check
connections, and try again. Would you like to try again now?" I try again and
the same thing happens.

Also I always delete my partial downloads before trying again, so I am
stumped on this one!

Are you trying to download to a server on a network, or to your local hard
drive?

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but I'm just retracing my steps that worked.
I DID have a problem trying to save to my E: Drive (partition) and just
saved to the desktop which worked fine. I think it was a permissions issue
for an alternate drive that came up unexpectedly in Beta 2, even though I had
been accessing the drive for other files with no problem. Have you tried the
desktop?

After reading your last post I was quite optimistic, because I had been
trying to save to my Drive E too, because it has so much more space. However,
I tried saving to the desktop - no go. I thought maybe it's a firewall issue
and the downloader has been blocked by zone alarm, but the downloader is a
Java app and not a seperate process, so i have no way of knowing. i don't
recall Zone alarm ever asking for permission for it - or is that because it's
through Internet Explorer? For the record also, I just tried the Akamai
download manager in Firefox, and I get a similar error - although this one
says "the file cannot be found on the server" This is proving so frustrating!

Cheers
