IDCS3 -- Need table help -- problem withresetting styles frame to frame.

Posted: 08-06-2008, 06:37 PM
Help. Have data tables with alternating row fills every other and alternating row rules every 4 (custom). The table flows thru frames from page to page and I need to reset the alternating rules at the top of a new column/frame per a style guideline -- in other words, the every other/every 4 needs to start at the top of each column, not continue from the previous. I thought I could add a column/frame break and apply a cell style to force a reset but that seems to work only intermittently. I'm obviously missing something 'cause I'm sure this comes up a lot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and I hope this makes sense to someone.

There is no feature to control the start of a new column. InDesign simply counts rows disregarding the place

The only way to exact some form of control is to add some empty rows at the end of the previous column.

Sorry Gerald but there is such a feature:

Table/Cell Options/Rows and Columns/Keep Options/Start Row/In Next Text Column

But you can't include that in a cell style.

However, a script could walk through a table applying this setting to every 8th row.

Dave, you are possibly right as to what Jessica actually wants.

I was put off track by the

'cause I'm sure this comes up a lot.

When I heard of this complaint in the past the users in question wanted a result like the one in my screenshot. "Start in new column" won't help you there. Adding empty rows off-document is the only way to go then.

Gerald and Dave --

Thanks so much for the information. You guys are awesome, patrolling the internet for InDesign damsels in distress...

I think Gerald did know what I needed. I'm sorry that we have to use a workaround, but glad to know I'm not missing something. Unfortunately, I was trying to sell my client on using tables for this project and this situation may cause the main designer to balk. Oh well.

Many thanks again.
Jessica
