Default IDE Transfer Speeds

I have two Western Digital drives in master/slave mode. The OS is on the
master (WD4000BB) and the slave (WD1000BB) is used for video capture.
Motherboard is an Intel D845EBG2.

When I test transfer rates using a 100MB file, the slave drive can read and
write at around 35MB/sec. However the master can write at around 35MB/sec
but is only able to read at around 15MB/sec.

Can anyone suggest any possible reasons for this behaviour? I've tried the
same tests in Safe Mode with similar results.

Alan
