Inability to ping another computer

I have two PC's both on Win XP Pro. I have them directly
connected with crossover cable. I have installed the
latest drivers from the manufacturers for each LAN card.

For the remote computer:
I am able to connect over the Internet over the network
and to ping the host computer. I am unable to see any
computers on Network Connections.

For the host computer:
I cannot ping the remote computer and do not see the
remote computer on Network Connections although I am able
to see the host computer's shared files.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

First try and get the ping working. Usually when this fails there is a
firewall on one or both computers.
