Incorrect Characters being printed to the screen - sometimes

Posted: 06-29-2007, 08:52 PM
I'm running Vista Business on 32 bit laptop and a co-working is running Vista
Business on 64 bit laptop. We both have the same issues with our keyboards
periodically.
It seems like it can happen almost anywhere (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer,
SQL Server Management Studio,...), but does not happen everywhere when it
does.

The symptoms
I'll be writing some code or documentation and the keys I hit don't
correspond to what is being printed to the screen. For example, often times
a single quote (') will appear on the screen as (`) or a question mark will
appear as <. Another co-worker has also complained of this happening but I'm
not sure what version of Vista they are running.
Most times it seems like if I close the application that it is taking place
in and re-open it the issue is solved, but today I had to reboot the machine
in order to get it to work again.
I've checked my regional settings and keyboard layout when it happens and
nothing in the setting indicate that there is an issue, it's set to US-ENG.
Anyone have this same issue - and know how to solve it?

Simon W,

Hardware not functioning properly is most likely caused by driver issues.
The following is a link to a Microsoft article for troubleshooting keyboard
problems:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/258826

The link offers suggestions for troubleshooting a Microsoft keyboard, but
the steps involved shouldn't be much different for any keyboard, even those
on a laptop. Oftentimes, hardware issues can be resolved by installing the
latest
drivers, if any are available. I have no knowledge about updated drivers.
However, it's always a good idea to download and install all the Vista
updates available of the Microsoft update site

If you can't resolve your problem any other way, you may want to consider
asking Microsoft directly for information on how to handle this problem. You
can learn how to contact Microsoft support on the Microsoft website and
looking for information on how to make contactl.

Another approach is to check with the manufacturer of your laptops to learn
whether they have suggestions for resolving the issue.

try an external keyboard.
reinstall the chipset drivers and keyboard drivers if applies.
update the BIOs version.
if it was working before, try a system restore.
