Inspiron 5150 running with fan at full speed which generates heat!

I am running Vista Beta 2 on my Inspiron 5150 3.0 GHZ, 1.256 GB RAM, 60 GB
HDD after upgrading from Windows XP PRO.

Now as soon as the laptop boots up and I logon, the fan starts running at
full speed which makes the laptop very hot and sometimes I have to shutdown
the laptop to cool it down.

I tried to find the culprit by stopping services but it does not help.

Has anyone else faced this problem? Are there any solutions.

Otherwise, I am thinking of reverting back to Windows XP Pro.

The fact that the fan is running at full speed sounds like the computer is
hot, not the other way around. Sounds like the system is getting close to it
limits.
You wrote that you had to shut down the computer sometimes, did it freeze or
did you just get worried about the temperature?

Monitor the CPU.temp and/or system.temp to see if they get close to/above
recomended limits.

Try this: control panel-> system and maintenance-> system-> Advanced System
Settings-> Advanced-> visual Effects : select "Adjust for best performance"

Although I tried that, it does not help.

And I shut it down as I was worried about the temp and ultimately burning my
leg

The CPU temp is about 71.

Hello,

Disable the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" service and see if that
helps.

If the CPU temp is getting high, you should be able to see witch process
that is taking the recourses, I'm wondering if the Indexing service may take
a lot of recourses the first 24hours or so.
Try down clocking the CPU, monitor the temp. If it stays below limits, let
the computer work for it self a day or so, to complete its Indexing.

Please let us know if you find out something, this is interesting.

The heat issue is a "Common" aspect of Vista. Because of Glass and
other visual enhancements, the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) runs
at a higher level than in previous OS'es. Notebooks weren't designed
to have such a constant GPU use and can't dissipate the heat. I've had
to use manual fan control programs such as Speed Fan to have the
fan trigger temp set lower and run the fans at a higher rotational speed.
Also Dell notebooks are already quite warm and it's advisable to have
a System Tray monitoring app running to watch CPU/Drive sensors.

The fact that the graphics card was not originally intended to support
Directx 10 and that it is an AGP interface may be causing the card to be
running at full capacity trying to keep up to the new Vista GUI.
