Install vista on 2nd hard drive

I have a T60 laptop. The primary hd has windows xp on it. I don't want to
touch it.
I got a ultraslim ATA Hard drive adapter and a 80GB hd.

Can I boot up from the USB external DVD-Burner and install vista on the 2nd
HD ?

Is there anything I should pay more attention ?

Once you set this up, you must always have your USB hard disk plugged in
whenever you boot up your desktop or you will get an error, not letting you
boot anything
