Install Vista over existing XP Pro?

When Vista is released for sale will I be able to run the DVD to replace my
winxp installation? Will my installed software Office etc be incorporated
into the new Vista installation?

Hi Chris,

That would be a typical upgrade scenario. It is fairly safe to say "yes",
this capability will be part of the release version provided the version of
Office you are using is supported under Vista (currently that has not been
specified, but likely the supported versions will be 2002 (XP), 2003, and
2007).

One possible issue that all potential upgraders should consider and rectify
is that Vista will not install on a FAT32 partition, where XP will. If you
are running XP on a FAT32 partition, you should investigate non-destructive
tools to convert to NTFS.
One such tool is Partition Magic.

Start/run cmd
convert c: /fs:ntfs

Follow the prompts to convert after restarting (you can't dismount the
volume while Windows is running on it).

Be aware that before doing such you should ensure the partition is properly
aligned. If not, you will get 512byte clusters rather than the preferred 4k
which could inhibit performance. FAT32 partitions generally are not aligned
for conversion, and this can be fixed with some utilities like BootIT NG
from terabyteunlimited.com.
