Installation Problems

Posted: 07-12-2003, 08:58 PM
I have just attempted to upgrade to XP home edition from
ME but seem to have made a mess of it! Initially, it went
OK but I found that my Symantec Winfax Pro and Antivirus
2003 would not work. I tried all the suggested actions on
the Symantec website but they didn't help either. I
decided therefore to restore ME, uninstall the two
applications and then try the upgrade. This has left me
with a Blocking Issue on the XP upgrade as follows:

'Microsoft Shared Fax Client
Your existing Microsoft fax application will not be
available
after upgrading to Windows XP, and will be replaced by
the
Windows XP Fax. Please uninstall this fax application
using the
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, and then
restart the
upgrade. Your current fax settings and data will be
saved, and
you can use Windows XP Fax to access your existing fax
servers
after the upgrade.'

ME doesn't have Microsoft Fax and when I try and reinstall
Winfax in ME, it won't do it, telling me to reboot to
clear the previous uninstall, which, of course doesn't
work!

I guess there is a file remaining in there from Winfax
that XP thinks is from Microsoft Fax.

I'm stuck so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope this is the right Group, if not please advise.

Mick Watts

Hi Bo,

It's the old MS fax and messenging program. You need to uninstall it from
the Win98 system before proceeding. WinXP has its own fax client you can
install afterwards. You should find it in the control panel/add &
remove/windows setup tab.

I have recently tried to install windows XP on a computer
and after i format the harddrive i recieve this message
"Setup was unable to format the partition. the disk may be
damaged.
Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected
to your computer. If the disk is a scsi disk, make sure
your scsi devices are properly terminated. Consult your
computer manual or scsi adapter documentation for more
information.
You must select a different partition for windows XP"
I do not have any scsi devices installed and i have tried
changing the partition between FAT32 and NTFS.

Don't know if not doing this would have this effect, but
did you format it with the /sys option and/or do the
fdisk /mbr thing??

Oh yeah, and make sure you've set an active partition
using fdisk.

RE XP istallation.
I would sugest you FORMAT twice, deleting the partition
each time, and make sure the new partition is the right
size.
Hopethis helps.
Jim.
