Installing 32bit vista ultimate on a 64 bit hardware

Posted: 01-12-2009, 02:13 AM

Hi,

I have a laptop which came with 64 bit vista ultimate pre-installed.
read online that 64 bit vista ultimate requires minimum 4G RAM for goo
performance. Since, I have only 2G RAM (max support by hardware)
thought of migrating to 32 bit vista ultimate.

Please advise if running 32 bit vista ultimate on a 64 bit hardwar
(Intel Core2Duo T7200, 2.0 GHz) with 2G RAM have any significan
performance boost?

Thank you,
Mahes

Hi,

You can run the 32-bit version on the 64-bit hardware, but it's unnecessary.
I find that x64 runs just fine on 2GB of ram.

Where ever you read that, I'd suggest not going there for reliable info
anymore. Vista x64 runs just fine on 2GB, even so it would be less of a
hassle to upgrade the ram than wipe and install x86.

I've run both 32 bit and 64 bit Vista on my machine with 2GB RAM and haven't
had any issues. At the moment, though, there isn't a lot of 64 Bit
applications available (even though you can run 32 Bit apps on 64 Bit
system). For that reason and that reason alone I mainly use 32 bit now
instead of 64 Bit. As soon as more 64 Bit apps come online then I will
revert back to 64 Bit Vista.

Vista 64 bit works just fine on a 2GB. There is some confusion caused by the
fact that any version of Vista preloads more of the OS on systems with more
memory in order to improve response time if any of the additional functions
are needed shortly after the boot. The memory used by these additional
functions is marked as available for use when applications start requiring
more memory.
IMHO just the fact that the 64Bit VISTA itself is a 64 bit program and can
therefore perform better is an excellent reason to use it.

Hi guys,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I got the point that 32 & 64 bit vista ultimate runs fine with 2G RA
on 64 bit hardware platform. But can you please throw more light on th
performance of these OS. i.e.
1. 32 bit vista ultimate on 64 bit hardware platform (or
2. 64 bit vista ultimate on 64 bit hardware platfor

Which of the above performs better

Curious already answered this question.

"IMHO just the fact that the 64Bit VISTA itself is a 64 bit program and can
therefore perform better is an excellent reason to use it."
