installing scanner

I am running WinXP Pro and cannot get the Add New Hardware Wizard to
recognise that the XP compatible Canon scanner is connected. I have
installed the drivers and acompanying software and I am able to use it, but
it still does not show in hardware devices, and so other programs won't
recognise that it is there either.

Which model of Canon scanner?

Connected via a USB port?
