INstalling security updates

Posted: 08-01-2003, 12:55 AM
For the past month now, I have been paying attention to
the critical updates posted on the microsoft web site. I
never had before. I seem to be able to download these
updates but when it gets to the installation phase of the
screen, it seems to lock up and not do anything. I have
left th ecomputer untouched for more than 30 minutes
waiting to see if anything happens but nothing does. I
turn off the machine and then go back to microsoft.com to
see if the updates made it on to the computer but they
don't. I hit download and install again, the download
goes very quickly like the files are already on the
computer but they don't seem to be able to be installed.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Hope this information assists:

If Updates fail to install:-
If you receive a 643 error message or a message indicating that Windows
Update was unable to complete the operation. This may occur if the catalog
database (Edb.log) is damaged.
Try this:-
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log
This command will force the catalog database to rebuild itself.

Errors Occur When You Try to Install Updates from the Windows Update Web
Site

If the Windows Update scan feature reaches 100%, and then displays "There
are no updates available at this time" message.
Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet
Explorer language option is not empty.
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options"
dialog.

Windows Update Is Not Installed

This issue may occur if you use the AOL Web browser interface to access and
download Windows Updates. The AOL Web browser does not communicate properly
with the Windows Installer software, and this may cause Windows Installer to
stop responding.

double click c drive, double click wutemp folder. this is
where the downloaded and uninstalled files are. double
click each one, do not restart after each one, wait till
your done. some of the updates are included in your
service pack. you will know which ones after you double
click them. once youv'e done this go back to get updates
and run it. the ones you had problems with the install
portion should not be there. worked for me

Installing security updates

Hi.
I've been looking for a few hours for somewhere to email
for help with regards to installing the security updates
I've downloaded for Windows XP from the microsoft
website. The download was completed but the installation
wasn't due to the time it took to download. How do I
install the updates?

Thank you

It's a little hard to understand what you mean, but it sounds like you went
to Windows Update and started to download the critical security updates --
good work; do it every week -- but your connection to the Internet cut off
before the download could be completed. In that case, go back to Windows
Update and do it again.

If you read the Windows Update web page carefully, you will see links that
provide information about using Windows Update, including a FAQ.
