Installing Vista on Thinkpad

Posted: 12-09-2006, 11:36 PM
I am planning on installing Vista on my ThinkPad T42. I have mae an image
back up of the IBM service partition and burned it onto a DVD. The service
partition amounts to maybe 5 GB of a 40 GB hard drive. Is there any reason
why I might want to maintain this partition in being on the computer rather
than use the entire hard disk for Vista?

Advice will be gratefully received. Good wishes to all.

Yes! It is your recovery option if Vista doesn't work for you.

Colins arrogant way of thinking is that something has to not work for
someone to not like vista.
I on the other hand say, that vista can be bugless, and run as designed...
but its design is bad.

You may say that its a matter of taste then... well.....

There are fundamental laws that govern beauty and elegance.... All great
artists know this,
Leonardo da Vinci knew this. This knowlage comes from very ancient
times....before recorded history,
and recently it is trying to be analysed by science...

Science analytical way of understanding however breaks down
things into components. That is why it cannot grasp the beauty of the whole,
or the gestalt.

As the ancient Greek works for good is "Kalos" which goes beyond simply
good.
Its a holistic view of good, balanced, beautiful.. both in functionality and
elegance...
a work of art.

But you must have an artistic side to understand what I am talking about.
That side has been neglected
by our technological world...technology without feeling will lead us to
destruction. It is the wisdom of the heart that should be
in control.

Vista is not beautiful in every aspect of it..... and what is worse.. is
that it will be retarding
the advancement of technology and humanity, and expression, and spirit. It
is the extension of the human mind,
more that a tool... it is like a musical instrument to create new
symphonies, it is creating our future.

It sadens me to see how people are slaves of technology and go blindly where
some lead them to,
without a background of understanding and thought....

And that is why I am so different. I know... I understand.. I see beyond
what most see.. in space and time and feeling...

How can I explain the depth of all this in a newsgroup? I cannot. And that
is the reason I do not explain.

I don't comment about you personally. Don't try to bait me into one of your
Contrarian games by making ad hominem attacks.

no real attacks...

It is interesting to understand that the word technology comes from the 2
greek words,
Techni = art
and logos = word

"Word" has a powerful meaning

You need to create an image of the whole drive with all partitions in one
image. IBM uses a non-standard boot sector which will get overwritten when
Vista is installed. Just restoring the service partition image won't get the
bootsector back.

Personally, I would suggest making a backup of the entire computer using an
image-based backup program before you begin. I would also, if possible,
create the set of recovery CDs from the IBM Rapid Restore software. Then
you'd have an "out" if you decided that Vista wasn't right for you and/or it
did not work on your laptop.
