Intel Core Duo – Intel Dual Core ?

Posted: 07-18-2006, 07:33 PM
Hi All,

Not sure if I can raise this here or not, Still I will raise my Question

Now a days, there are lot of Laptops in the market are available with Intel
Core Duo microprocessors. Are these Intel Core Duo is same as Intel Dual Core?

When I am searching in Web, I found an article in which it specifies Intel
Core Duo is different from Intel Dual Core. Specs are as follows:

Intel Core
• Introduced January 2006
• Yonah 0.065 μm (65 nm) process technology
• 667 Mhz frontside bus
• 2 MiB (Shared on Duo) L2 cache
• Variants:
o Intel Core Duo T2600 2.16 GHz
o Intel Core Duo T2500 2.00 GHz
o Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83 GHz
o Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66 GHz
o Intel Core Solo T1300 1.66 GHz
o Intel Core Solo T1200 1.50 GHz [1]

Pentium D (Which is a Dual Core processor)

• Dual-core microprocessor
• No Hyper-Threading
• 800(4x200) MHz front side bus
Smithfield
• Introduced May 26, 2005
• 2.8–3.4 GHz (model numbers 820-840)
• 90 nm process technology
• 1 MiB x 2 (non-shared, 2 MiB total) L2 cache
• Cache coherency between cores requires communication over the FSB
• Performance increase of 60% over similarly clocked Prescott
• 2.66 GHz (533 MHz FSB) Pentium D 805 introduced December 2005
Presler
• Introduced January 16, 2006
• 2.8–3.6 GHz (model numbers 920-960)
• 65 nm process technology
• 2 MiB x 2 (non-shared, 4 MiB total) L2 cache

Can any one suggest me which is which?

Thanks in Advance
Kode.

I think they're both dual core. "Duo" is for the energy efficient/latop
chips and D is for hotter hungrier the desktop chips. But don't quote me on
that. Better to go to Intel's site and see for yourself.

The way I understand it (but as always, I could be wrong!):

Core Duo is a single processor that supports multithreading in an efficient
manner.

Core 2 Duo is two separate processors on a single chip.

Duo is simply a trademarked name.

How about this: All "Dual Core" Pentium Processors have two processors
embedded on the chip, but not all "Core Duo" processors are "Dual Core."

It's Intel's way of keeping people confused, I believe.

My Goodness, Thank you Mark.

This is unbeleavable. This is real confusion from INTEL.

I wonder, if any one buying Dell Laptop's know about this. Dell always
selling INTEL CORE DUO .

DOES THIS CHIP PRODUCERS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE PRODUCING?

I wonder if there is any good supporting document about this.

Thank you Mark & Alan
Kode.

Maybe that's why Intel is having a layoff.

Well, yes all Core Duo are dual core, but there is a Core Solo, so not all
Core processors are dual core. Core is a new line of processors that have
more efficient messaging in the unit.

Re: Intel Core Duo - Intel Dual Core ?

Core Solo is single core.

All Core Duo and Core Duo 2 chips are dual core.

Core Duo is 32bit and Core Duo 2 is 64bit.

All Core cpu's support Virtualization Technology in hardware.
