| I am running Windows XP Home. The computer is connected via the ethernet port to a Linksys router / wireless access point. Programs on the XP computer can't access the internet (i.e Nortons Anti Virus software for live update, Microsoft Money, etc.) even though Internet Explorer connects fine. The other computers connected to the Linksys router connect to the internet OK, and their programs can access the internet. So I think the problem is with the XP computer set up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. | Guest

| I am adding a new XP workstation to a NT 4.0 server LAN and cannot get through the gateway on the server to the internet. All the old PCs (WIN98) work fine to the internety. The XP PC can see the server and mapped drives etc. Just can't get out on the net. Thoughts? | Guest

Internet? Is this XP Home or Pro? If Pro, have you joined the domain? Is TCP/IP set to be the default protocol? Is there some kind of security set up on the server that is not allowing the new machine out? -Bruce D | Guest

| Hi I am having major problems with an XP installation. when i try to add an Internet connection through the wizard, the dial up option is greyed out. I have looked in services and see that the remote access connection manager service is not started. When i try to start the service it tells me access is denied. Any help would be great E | Guest

I just love all of these totally vague postings. How about mentioning what KIND of "XP installation" you are talking about? Think that just MIGHT help someone else understand what the cause of the issue is? Here is my GUESS: You did an upgrade from an XP cdrom that did not include Service Pack 1 and the previous installation of XP did include SP1. When you did that upgrade, you removed SP1 and all XP Critical Updates including the one that deals with the RPC vulnerability exploited by the MSBLASTER worm and its variants. Before you connect to the Internet, make sure you are behind a router with a firewall or have a functioning third-party firewall or have the XP ICF enabled. Then you will need to immediately go to the Windows Update site and get all Service Packs (SP1A) and critical updates installed. SP1A will need to be installed separately and be sure to reboot before going back for the rest of the critical updates. This article will restore your Dial Up connection: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;329441 ================================================== == | Guest
